From the moment I got here last September, I kept hearing about the Azalea Festival. Everyone talked about how great it is and that I’m going to love it.
As the parent of two young girls, I have become an aficianado of the fair/festival over the last few years. Not a “fall festival” went by while we were in West Virginia without the presence of our family. I saw enough funnel cakes and bouncy houses to last me a lifetime. It is fun watching the girls enjoy the excitement — don’t get me wrong. But, I’ve kind of had the feeling of “been there — done that.”
So, I looked forward to the Azalea Festival, but have to admit I was skeptical.
We started out slowly at the circus at the airport. The girls loved it. It was entertaining. Then we headed downtown, where I have to admit I was also dreading the search for a parking spot. That was surprisingly easy for us to find.
I was amazed at the number of people downtown and the amount of things taking place. The riverfront was packed. The tour of the tall ship, the Peacemaker, was a lot of fun. My daughters loved it! They kept looking for the pirates. There was music on several corners. There were food vendors and other vendors everywhere.
Oh yeah, we saw our funnel cakes and of course we bounced on the bouncy house. But there was so much to see and do, it really was a good time.
I’m looking forward to next year already!
